How Did Childhood Experiences Shape Your Leadership Style?

Leadership Styles in The Me-Suite

What childhood experiences most shaped your leadership style?

I grew up in a family business that made medical examination tables. I did my part running drill presses and staple guns. My favorite job was sweeping sawdust. I enjoyed the smell of freshly cut wood and the instant gratification of the clean-up. Conversations about customers, employees, and money swirled around me all the time. I recall the most influential moments with my parents in business:

Mom: Treat each customer and employee like it's the only one you have.
Dad: Make the best decision you can with the information you have at the time.
Both parents: Act like you've got some sense. (In today's gentler language, perhaps this one comes out more like "make good choices.")

We bring our work home to our families, no matter the business we're in. Make good choices.
